Am9 is a minor ninth chord and belongs to the category of extended chords because it has more thirds than the seventh chord. What makes this chord a bit unusual here is that although it is played from the 5th position, it includes also open strings.
This type of chords are very usual in popmusic and also in flamenco-nuevo and jazz. The open strings let you play quite loud and this chord is often played with the rasgueado technique, i.e. strumming.
The bass is doubled, so if your 2nd finger touches the 5th string it is still OK!
