E9 is a ninth chord and a ninth chord is a chord with a ninth, and is an extended chord. Here the fingering is given so that you can use it to play all other ninth chords (X9). Just pick a right position.
When the ninth chord has minor seventh inside then it acts and is used like dominant seventh chords. There are some exeptions (blues!) but normally this chord resolves as all dominant chords.
To play this chord is usually no problem. Just be careful that you don't touch 5th and 6th strings.
